The Ministry of Health Zanzibar said that the Waste X project has encouraged many young people to become self-employed and keep the environment clean together to make a living and make their living.
This was stated by Zanzibar Director of Health Education Dr Salim Slim at the closing meeting of the Waste X Project, which operated for a year and 42 groups in the country were beneficiaries of the stunt.
He noted that the Government through development partners including Unicef, UNDP, KOICA have been able to work together to provide professional training to the people in the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba to make waste valuable and able to do various things such as charcoal, fertilizer, tables and sanitary equipment.
He urged the beneficiaries of the project to continue to use the skills and opportunities they have had to turn waste into value and to be creative in terms of income and to continue to protect the environment to eliminate disease in the islands of Zanzibar and Pemba.
Regional and Local Government Co-ordinating Director Zainab Khamis Kibwana said the national guidelines emphasize sanitation and improve public health in urban and village level areas.
He said that in terms of the environment, the main focus is on waste storage and making waste an opportunity, so through the Waste X project it will help implement the recycling of waste into value and protect the environment through various groups in the country.
Chakechake Municipal Director Maulid Mwalim Ali said the main goal of the project was to fight dirt issues to live in a clean and safe environment, and stressed the continued strengthening of the group and to continue to bring greater benefits to the community.
He said the Department of Health and Environment will continue to work with the group to improve environmental health by bringing about change in the country and providing them with more professionalism.
One of the group members, Fatma Maulid Shomar, from Kwahani, said they had achieved great success in tackling their work through the Health and Environment Unit and had learned different parts and are now working very effectively.
