MMH is the only tertiary/referral hospital for Zanzibar, It is a semi-autonomous public hospital established by the Act No 3 of 2016 Establishing Mnazi Mmoja Hospital. It has a bed capacity of 678 spread over three campuses. The main campus, MMH, located in downtown Stone Town, has 541 beds. Mwembeladu Maternity Home has 37 beds and Kidongo Chekundu Mental Hospital 100 beds. Both the maternity and mental hospitals are located within the city limits of Stone Town but outside of the downtown area. MMH is a tertiary institution but it also manages outpatient cases that are mainly self-referrals and makes MMH be a busy hospital. In 2016 the hospital has given services to 117,263 outpatients and 34,767 inpatients. About 5033 patients were admitted and 608 all causes death was reported. MMH is managed through 8 Directorates (Planning & Finance, Operations & Administrations, Clinical Services, Nursing Services, Pharmaceutical Services, Engineering Services, Training & Research, Diagnostic services). It has 20 clinical departments/units; including internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, surgery, orthopedics, ophthalmology, otolaryngology, dentistry, radiology, and laboratory. MMH runs several specialty clinics including gynecology, surgical, ENT, acupuncture, physical and occupational therapy, diabetes and hypertension and HIV/STD clinics. It also provides maternity services at Mwembeladu and in an outpatient mental health services at Kidongo Chekundu Hospital. A TB & leprosy, Methadone Assisted Therapy as well as HIV (CTC) clinics are run by MMH in collaboration with respective programs.
