Introduction

The Department of Nursing and Midwifery was created earlier at the year 2023, by Zanzibar President Dr. Hussein Ali Hassan Mwinyi, this is after seeing the importance of the department due to the large number of its executives in the entire health care system, to ensure the health of the people is improved, including the elderly, Pregnant women and children and the community at large, when they go to get care in health centers, hospitals and even at the community (Community Based Care).

Earlier on 30/01/2023 it was officially announced the Directorate at the Zanzibar Ministry of Health. We thank him and congratulate him on the unquestionable decisions that will make a big difference.

The structure of the Department consists of three (3) main divisions namely:

1. Division of Nursing and Midwifery: the role of this division is to oversee the functions of Nursing services, midwifery services as well as work ethic and customer service.

2. Nursing and Midwifery Division: the role of this division are to manage all nursing and midwifery services for the island of Pemba

3. Division of Standards, Quality and Research: the role of this division are to oversee nursing and midwifery training in the areas of self-development training and workplace training (On job training), surveys (Clinical Research) and nursing and midwifery publications.

  1. Enhance quality of nursing and midwifery services at all levels (public and private)
  2. Provide strategic technical advice to the government on nursing and midwifery services within the health care system
  3. Promote evidence based and standardized nursing and midwifery practice
  4. Develop collaborative partnership with key stakeholders at national, regional and international levels
  5. Coordinate nursing and midwifery training (long and short course) to escalate profession and provide quality services in the community.

      The department is committed to provide its services through government policies and programs as well as the policy of Chama Cha Mapinduzi as the ruling party 2020-2025, as well as the guidelines of the World Health Organization (WHO), the International Council of Nurses (ICN) and the World Confederation of Midwives (ICM) in the implementation of its duties.
