The Ministry of Health Zanzibar has said that it will cooperate with various local and foreign institutions to make deliberate efforts to ensure that cancer does not continue to affect the people of Zanzibar.
Minister of Health Zanzibar Nassor Ahmed Mazrui has explained this in his office when he had a conversation with a delegation from the Ocean Road Cancer Institute with the aim of strengthening services for Zanzibar.
He said that cancer has been increasing day to day this year, the Ministry of Health Zanzibar has sent patients for treatment where 118 new patients have been sent to the Ocean Road Institute.
He said that due to the increase in cancer here in the country, the Ministry of Health continues to make an effort to prevent the disease from continuing to affect the community as it is not contagious, it is a disease that is caused by many factors, including changing the lifestyle of eating foods that are high in fat. excessive salt consumption and lack of exercise.
He has informed that the Ministry of Health will continue to provide education to the public through a cancer prevention project with the aim of protecting the people of Zanzibar from cancer, which in Zanzibar, cervical cancer, breast cancer and prostate cancer in men are the leading causes of male genital mutilation. here in the country.
On his part, Cancer specialist and Director of Medical Services of the Ocean Road Institute Mark Athumani Mseti has said that they have seen the need to involve Zanzibar in the project to deal with cancer in Tanzania which has been continuing to affect the community.
He said that the Ocean Road institution has been receiving many patients from Zanzibar compared to the number of citizens of the islands of Unguja and Pemba where he said that through the cancer prevention project and 90 percent of the investment will be in the prevention of cancer and Zanzibar will be part of the example in the project.
On the other hand Dr. Zomola from the NGEZI foundation has said that they wish the number of cancer patients will decrease significantly in Tanzania and this project will enable prevention and strengthening of the national workforce.
In another step, the Minister of Health Zanzibar Nassor Ahmed Mazrui has met with a delegation from BADEA to discuss the entire issues of the start of the renovation and expansion of the Mnazimmoja hospital where its construction will officially begin at the beginning of 2024.
He said that the funds for the renovation and expansion project of Manazimjoja Hospital are derived from a loan from BADEA in collaboration with the Quiet fund and the Saudi Arabian fund and were able to get about 45 million dollars and the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar has invested three million dollars for the construction of the some hospital.
