The Zanzibar Ministry of Health has said that it will continue to cooperate with the Chinese Government in providing various health services, including screening for cervical cancer.
The Minister of Health Zanzibar Nassor Ahmed Mazrui has explained this during the meeting when he received the cervical cancer examination report conducted by doctors from China, Mnazimmoja Hospital, and the Non-Communicable Diseases Unit held on the 4th to the 28th of the 11th month.
He said that for this fifth phase, two thousand and eight hundred people have been successfully examined, which is below the intended target due to the rain and floods in different areas of the country.
Minister Mazrui informed that they have planned for the next phase of the exercise by examining more people in the islands of Unguja and Pemba and those who will be found will be given treatment to be able to reduce the disease.
On his part, the Director General of the Ministry of Health in Zanzibar, Dr. Amour Suleiman Mohamed, has said that in addition to the examination of cervical cancer, they were also able to examine other diseases, including sexually transmitted diseases, and those diagnosed with these diseases were given treatment.
On his part, the Manager of the Non-Communicable Diseases Division in Zanzibar Dr. Omar Mohammed Suleiman has said that the cervical cancer screening exercise will involve about 34,000 mothers in Unguja and Pemba and is expected to end next year.
He has informed that up to now a total of 19,432 women have already been examined in different phases where for this fifth phase a total of 2800 women equal to 56 percent have been examined which is less than the target of 5000 women.
He said that a total of 77 women have been diagnosed with cervical cancer of which 59 women have been confirmed to have early stage cancer and 18 women have been diagnosed with advanced stage cancer and have been treated at Mnazimmoja Hospital and others have been sent to Ocean Road for further treatment.
On the part of the Director of Cancer Diseases from Najing Hospital in China, Dr. Huaijun Zhou has said that the goal of cervical cancer screening in this country is the continuation of the screening of the disease.
He said that due to the cooperation between the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar and China, they will continue to conduct the cervical cancer screening exercise and continue to provide results and will enable us to know the real situation of cervical cancer here in Zanzibar.
