The Ministry of Health Zanzibar has signed an agreement with the Chinese Government to be handed over the project of the Abdalla Mzee Hospital at Mkoani Pemba after a major renovation and expansion of the Hospital by the Chinese Government.
The Minister of Health Zanzibar Nassor Ahmed Mazrui has said that the project which started in 2020 has involved adding buildings and doing major repairs and increasing the number of beds to 160 from the 80 beds that were there before.
He has informed that at the beginning the Abdalla Mzee Hospital had about 3260 square meters and now it has increased to about eight thousand square meters after being renovated and repaired by the Chinese Government.
He said that the maintenance and procurement has been done and officially completed despite the interruption of the maintenance due to the presence of the 19th epidemic in the years 2020 and led to a delay in the end of time, however, in the eighth month of 2023 and the Chinese Government has completed the project and handed it over.
In addition, he thanked the Chinese Government for strengthening the Health Sector in different fields, including the development of the construction of Doctors’ Houses at Mkoani as well as helping in the entire problem of Schistosomiasis in Pemba Island.
He said the Revolutionary Government of Zanzibar through the Ministry of Health will continue to cooperate with China especially in strengthening health services in the country.
For his part, the Chinese Ambassador to Zanzibar, Zhang Zhisheng, has said that China will continue to help Zanzibar, including the health sector, in all aspects of continuing to bring doctors, medical equipment and medicine.
He has informed that due to the existing relationship between Zanzibar and China, they will continue their efforts to see that the health sector is supported and continues to grow in the islands of Unguja and Pemba.
